Actual subject: Rocky Grass recordings

Hello again John,

Obviously I am not too consistent in following up on posts. I am still interested though. By the way, what a shame about Planet Bluegrass and all the folks in Lyons and surrounding areas getting flooded out. I hope that is not your home area.

Of the performers you listed, I am especially interested in Helen Highwater, Tim O'Brien, and the Andy Statman Trio.

I am just looking into the bit torrent thing. There is a lot I don't know, but I think I'll figure it out.

Thanks,
Steve

Hey Steve,

I've uploaded the Helen Highwater set to:

http://archive.org/details/hh2013-07-26.flac16

There is some wind noise on tracks 11 and 12, but otherwise, it sounds very good.

I'm not going to bother with the Tim O'Brien set; there is just too much wind noise to make it worthwhile.

I'll upload the Andy Statman Trio next. I recorded it from up front with a different set of microphones, so it will have a very different sound.

John

Thank you again for the upload. On the morning of July 26 I was listening to this music sitting with my son and friends on the far bank of the sweet little St. Vrain River with my feet in the water not 100' from the stage. What a beautiful day. It is hard to believe that whole area is so devastated by the recent floods. I wish those good people up there the best in getting everything back together.

By the way, are you in or around Denver? I am on the east coast, but my son is in Denver working with a very cool microbrewery to which I'd be happy to refer you if you are interested.

Thanks for the music.
Steve

Steve,

I do live in the Denver area (NW suburbs). Which brewery does your son work with? They're popping up everywhere out here these days. I mostly go to the ones in Boulder and downtown Denver.

Re: your cover art, by all means have at it. I'd love to see your work. Maybe you could share it with dropbox or something like that?

Very cool. I love Denver and get out there every summer (though as a Ravens' fan I find it less than hospitable lately). My son, Derek, is with River North Brewery, a couple of blocks down Blake Street from Coors Field. They brew very sophisticated (IMO) Belgian style ales, quite heavy and rich for my less than sophisticated taste, but very creative and complex varieties. http://rivernorthbrewery.com/

Derek also has a business conducting walking tours of LoDo that visit and sample at a number of breweries. You might enjoy that as well, especially if you get company from out of town. http://www.denvermicrobrewtour.com/

My CD covers are mostly at my office. I'll get a couple together for you soon.

By the way, did you ever figure out why your uploads don't get listed on the archive? The ones today are not there yet.

Steve

Thanks for the links. We do go down to that area pretty often, so we'll try to check that place out. The tour sounds like fun too.

These recordings don't belong in the Live Music Archive because they aren't artists who have explicitly given permission for their recordings to be uploaded (The Del McCoury Band has given permission). That's why I've uploaded these other recordings to the Community Audio area instead.

I just wanted to add one show from my collection at home. This show by Calexico from 2003 is IMO about the best I ever downloaded from the archive:
http://archive.org/details/calexico2003-04-25.flac16

Here is the cover art:

I meant to mention on the previous post that the photo inside the Helen Highwater cover was taken right during their set. I recall because that is my son and his friends sitting on the opposite bank and I was on my way over to join them (after taking the photo on the front cover), which is where we listened to this performance. What a day.

John, there are the CD labels I made to the Rocky Grass shows you taped. I hope you can retrieve them (this is the first time I've tried this). Most of the photos used are ones I took in July. The closeup of the Andy Statman Trio is a screen grab from YouTube and the Del McCoury portrait is a publicity shot from online. Let me know your thoughts and if you have any other ideas.

Hi Steve,

Those look very nice. Why don't you post a review for each show and provide a link to your files within the review?

Thank you for sharing your work!

John

Steve,

I haven't seen the flooding first-hand, but it looks like almost a complete loss except for the main stage. It's going to take a lot of work to get things back in order, but they are committed to doing that.

I can upload those shows after I've done some cleanup and processing. The Tim O'Brien show in particular has some wind noise that I'll try and tame. Once I've uploaded I'll reply here with the URLs.

Hi John,

Thank you so much for those uploads. This is just about the coolest thing I've experienced. I have both performances now on CD. I've listened to them in my office, but I cannot really enjoy at the low volume I need to use here. Later on I will crank them up in my car and I can't wait. I also look forward to sharing them with my son (part of his Christmas gift) who turned me on to Rocky Grass.

I would like to repay you in kind for your kindness in sharing your talent, equipment and expertise, but I am not up/download savvy. However, I am a graphic designer and maybe you have use for something along that line. In particular I love creating CD covers (I already have a nice one of the Del McCoury at RockyGrass). Just let me know if you have any interest and we'll figure out a way I can share my work with you.

Thanks again.
Steve
